When my mother reached her mid-nineties, she could no longer hold a brush as arthritis began to take hold of her fingers.

​

Sadly, she had to give up the traditional Chinese art that played such a large part in her long life. Ensconced in her armchair where she spent most of her waking hours, her active mind now sought to express the vivid hues and colours of nature that she imagined.

​

And as always, she found a way, using pastels. Although she could barely hold the pastel stick for long, she was never one to be deterred by the slow deterioration of her body in old age.
